Reference Letter Request templates and tips!
This is a common pain point for many artists who want to apply to opportunities. The task of asking for a reference letter is enough to prevent some people from moving forward with applying. I have prepared template letters that artists can use to ease this process, and tips to keep in mind.

This is an email service that informs artists of approaching grant deadlines. Subscribers will receive:
Emails of up to 70 grants over the course of 2025.
An email one month in advance of each deadline
Information about each opportunity including application requirements, links, juror info (if available) and insights about the organization
A rating of the quality of the grant
An email reminder 2 weeks in advance of the deadline
Final reminder the day before the deadline
This is a “nudge service” so that artists don’t miss important grant deadlines.
Artists may sign up at any point of the year.

No. It is not a list.
-
Artists will receive at least 30 grant opportunities they are eligible for between January and December 2025
The 2024 Subscription sent over 70 grant deadlines to artists and I have over 190 on my comprehensive list. Not every artist will be eligible for every grant and there are grants out there that I don’t have eligible subscribers for.
Deadlines range from $200 micro-grants to prestigious awards.
These grant opportunities are all administered through open call / juried processes
-
Clearly defined information including:
The deadline
Description of the grant
Application requirements
Links to apply
Rating of the grant
Juror information (if available)
Links to follow the granting organization on Instagram
Other insights about the grant are included, if available.
In addition to money in support of your practice, many of these deadlines offer other career benefits such as publications, mentorship, jurors who will become familiar with your work, exhibitions, and prestige.

Subscription FAQs:
-
No. It is not a list but a service that sends out informative emails about grant deadlines as they approach.
-
Visual artists will receive a minimum of 40 grant opportunities over the course of one year. I have over 200 unique grant and monetary award opportunities on my list but some artists may not be eligible for every award. Also, some grants change their award cycles and part of this subscription service is to stay on top of current availabilities. This is why my minimum guarantee is low, but most artists will receive many more grant deadlines over the course of the year.
In 2023, I sent a total of 70 Grant Deadlines.
-
Artists are responsible for reading the guidelines to understand if they are eligible as the Artist’s Office will not make this determination. There may be grants that artists don’t (yet) qualify for based on age, stage of career, but are important opportunities to keep on the radar.
-
Most grants define Visual Artists as working within the following categories: painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installation, film and video, interdisciplinary/mixed media, performance art, and social practice.
-
A few artist grants may not be available to students, but students are welcome to become subscribers to learn about opportunities and apply for those they are eligible for.
-
The grant deadlines I send out are for US-based artists. A few may be open to international artists, but probably not most of them.
-
Artists will be notified of opportunities ranging from micro-grants of $200 to prestigious awards such as the Guggenheim Fellowship.
-
I have another subscription (the Artist Deadlines Subscription) that includes all types of open call deadlines such as exhibitions, publications, residencies, grants, and more. So to clarify: this subscription is just for opportunities that will get an artist some money. For more kinds of opportunities, please check out the Artist Deadlines Subscription.
-
No, it is not refundable.
What Artists are saying about the Grant Deadlines Subscription from The Artist's Office:
One of my non-negotiable subscriptions. Looking for grants and opportunities can take so much time, what I save from being a subscriber I can spend in the studio. It's much more than a database. It comes with Virginia's seasoned discerning and practical eye, she rates each grant, and sends reminder emails for those procrastinators! I tell every artist about it.
- Lauren K., Los Angeles, CA
Receiving the Grants Deadline Subscription is a godsend for me. Before I was subscriber I could never keep the deadlines straight. For all you artists who apply for grants this is a necessity. You won’t regret it. It’s only $24 for 2024, a bargain for what you get.
- Ann W., San Pedro, CA
I so appreciate the grant subscription newsletter. While I haven’t been awarded a grant yet, I’ve developed a better understanding of both the process and width of opportunities out there. Virginia’s honest assessment and notes on each help me decide which are and aren’t worth the trouble of my time, and all together the time it saves me easily pays for the subscription. I’ve passed it along to my artist friends because I find it so worthwhile. Highly recommend.
